A Leaner Thanksgiving for Economic Reasons

Americans are setting up for a leaner Thanksgiving this year, due to still-fragile economic conditions.

According to statistics, almost 40 percent of families are planning on a scaled-back version of Thanksgiving celebrations while 20 percent will host a dinner for just the family.

Household savings experts say that people are looking for ways to control spending and that events like a Thanksgiving dinner are on of the easiest places to start.  Last year the average cost of the November holiday dinner was nearly $43.

Experts say it isn’t just holiday-related spending but spending overall that has become more frugal for Americans.

While a recovery is taking place, it is still so slow and given the recent midterm election results, clearly many people are still unhappy with the Obama administration’s handling of the US economy.

Tuesday’s election could also have a new impact on foreclosures.  Unaffordable mortgages and still-high unemployment are likely to make times tough for a while yet.  Though the Democrats seem concerned with helping homeowners, it may not be plain sailing with new Republican power.
