What is a Business Loan?

A business loan is a loan for a business – whether a small start-up or a large corporation. Business loans are offered by banks, independent lenders and some government organizations.

How Much Can I Borrow for my Business?

The amount you can borrow for your business depends on a variety of factors, not dissimilar to when you are seeking a personal loan. The lender will take various elements into consideration:

  • Your business size
  • Your business income (or projected income)
  • Your personal financial background
  • Various other factors as determined by the lender

Your and your business' credit rating

Many lenders offer flexible loan amounts, from as little as $1,000 to 'the sky's the limit'.

Will I Need to Provide Collateral?

This depends on the lender. Some will ask that you provide collateral as a guarantee for the loan. Collateral is also described as a large asset such as property or a vehicle which acts as a security measure; if you are unable to repay your loan within the terms, your asset / collateral could be seized as payment.

If you are asked to provide collateral, the loan is a 'secured' loan. Before you take the loan, it is wise to think very carefully about how you will manage your loan repayments with your other financial obligations as you face the risk of losing something of value.
