Retailers See Record Sales Over the Weekend

Following fierce promotions from retails across the country for Black Friday, American shoppers set records in both traffic and sales, returning consumer activity to levels not seen since before the recession.

The National Retail Federation published figures showing that the each American shopper has on average increasing their spending by 9.1% over the past year. This is the biggest increase seen since 2006, and equates to nearly $400 per customer. From this Thanksgiving weekend to last, there were 6.6% more shoppers in store this year.

The vice president of the National Retail Federation, Ellen Davis, commented on the figures, saying that consumers across the US are ‘taking a deep breath and making a decision that it’s ok to go shopping again’ regardless of poor economic growth and high unemployment.

Strong shopping figures were also reported by ShopperTrak, a consumer research service, showing instore sales on Friday increasing by 6.6% from the same day last year, taking up the takings to £11.4 billion.
